1 . Most people like to eat meat. As they grow richer they eat more of it. Where does your meat come from? Maybe a cow, pig or chicken. Did you know that we can make "meat" out of plants as well?
Plant-based meat(植物肉)is not real meat, but looks and tastes like the real thing. It’s made out of plants like beans and peas. It’s getting more popular around the world these days. In the US, plant-based meat company Beyond Meat will sell its products (产品)in 5,000 more stores by the end of September. In June, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing. At the same time Pizza hut in China has also added plant-based meat to its menu.
Scientists say this food is better for the environment. Producing meat makes too many greenhouse gases(温室气体). If everyone in the world stopped eating meat, we will have more green trees and grass.
Eating plant-based food is also good for health. Many people get ill because they eat too much meat. Would you like to try plant-based meat?

2 . In our busy society where food is readily available (可得到的) from delivery services (递送) and fast food restaurants, almost one in three American adults is now considered to be obese.
Childhood obesity (肥胖) is also at an all-time high.
Obesity means being very overweight. If you are obese, you have too much body-fat. Doctors define (定义) obesity as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, and overweight as having a BMI of 25 to 30.
If you eat more food than your body can use, this will make you put on weight. Food that your body does not need as energy will be stored as fat by your body.
The following are the major factors (因素) that increase the risk of obesity.
•What you eat plays a major role in weight gain. Eating a lot of fattening foods such as hamburgers, sweet drinks, ice creams and other sweet and fatty foods can increase risk of becoming obese.
•If you do not do enough exercise, you will put on weight as the food you eat is not being used to make energy for physical activities.
•The chances of your obese are greater if your parents are obese.
•There are many psychological (心理的) factors that cause people to eat too much. People who are stressed, unhappy or bored will often eat to make themselves feel better. This is known as comfort eating.
•Aging is another factor, as you will be less active when you get older. The amount muscle (肌肉) in your body usually decreases (减少) as you get older and this causes the metabolism (新陈代谢) to slow down. As a result of these changes, you need to eat less, and if you do not eat less as you grow older, you will put on weight.
Obesity can cause many health disorders such as high blood pressure, diabetes (糖尿病), heart problems, cancer and many other serious medical conditions.

3 . So much a healthy life is about forming good habits. For people in many European countries, healthy food, regular exercise and taking time to relax are part of their daily routines. That probably helps to explain their ranking(名次) in Bloomingberg’s list of the healthiest countries in 2019. Here are the top three healthiest countries this year.
Spain As the world’s healthiest nation in the 2019 Healthiest Country Index, people in Spain have a “Mediterranean diet”. It includes seafood, nuts and vegetables. However, the healthiest thing about Spain is not the food, but rather the relaxing way that people enjoy it. While eating out, they may stay to talk, keep getting together, and perhaps share a glass of wine. If the conversation gets good, they’ll stay for hours until late night. |
Italy Like Spain, Italy’s typical(典型的) eating diet also plays a huge role in the country’s health. Rich in vegetables, fruits, fish and healthy oils, their diet is also heavy in healthy grains, which are high in fiber(纤维). Besides eating, Italians typically walk or cycle to their schools and offices. Usually, they spend less time sitting around than people in other countries. |
Iceland Iceland is one of the healthiest countries in the world. For example, they live very long lives. So what are Icelanders doing right? When it comes to eating, Icelanders keep things simple: lots of fresh dishes made up of seafood and dairy from grass-fed cows. This diet reduces the risks of some serious diseases. Maybe the most important is that hot springs(温泉) provide Icelanders with a relaxing place. Besides, they travel too much. |

5 . One way that scientists learn about man is by studying animals. In this lab, the scientists are studying the relationship(关系)between diet and health.
They are studying the relationship between the amount(数量)of food the mice eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All three groups get the same healthy food. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second group is eating two cups, and the third group is eating three cups.
After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day. The mice in this group are a little thinner. But they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another. Also, they are living longer. Mice usually live for two years. Most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years.
The second group of mice is healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. They are only living about two years.
The last group of mice gets more food than the other two groups. Most of the day, these mice are eating or sleeping. They are not very active. These mice are living longer than the scientists thought — about a year and a half. But they are not healthy. They are sick more often than the other two groups.

7 . College students often hear about the “freshman fifteen”. What does it mean? You may wonder.
It means the fifteen pounds, or about seven kilograms students might gain (获得) in their first year of college.
Many young men and women put on extra weight when they start college. Some schools have studied it. Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, has found that freshmen gain an average of four pounds during their first twelve weeks. That is almost two kilograms. If weight gain continues at this rate (比率), how long will they put on fifteen pounds? The answer is forty-five weeks, or almost a year.
And why do so many freshmen gain weight? The answers listed by experts are not so surprising. The freshmen gain weight because it’s the first time for college kids to enjoy complete control over their own lives. They may choose to eat and drink whatever they want, whenever they want. For example, college students often eat foods high in fat. After all, there are no parents around to say no to junk food. Students may also miss meals. They could be in class or studying or just … busy. Also, freshmen often use food to relax their mind, they will overeat when they have food as they have college pressures to deal with.
This may be short-lived (短暂的), but the weight gain should not be overlooked (忽视). Remember: It requires more effort to lose those pounds than to simply not gain them in the beginning. Or even worse, they may carry the extra weight around for years.

9 . Children in England will no longer be able to buy energy drinks. The UK government has made plans to ban (禁止) the sale of energy drinks to kids. It is now asking for public suggestions about what age the ban should start at (16 or 18), the BBC reported.
An energy drink is a type of drink that contains stimulants (兴奋剂), such as caffeine (咖啡因). Red Bull is one of the most famous energy drinks. The makers of these drinks say that they can give you energy when you feel tired.
However, these drinks have very high levels of sugar and caffeine. Energy drinks have 65 percent more sugar than normal soft drinks. This mainly may explain why the number of obesity (肥胖) children has risen.
Too much caffeine can lead to health problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness. A 250 ml can of Red Bull contains about 80 mg of caffeine, three times the level of a can of Coca-Cola, The Guardian noted.
In the UK, more than two-thirds of 10-to-17-year-old buy energy drinks, according to government data. “Children obesity is one of the greatest health challenges (挑战) this country faces. It’s important that we do all we can do to make sure children have the best start in life,” UK Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement.
The ban would apply to (应用于) drinks containing more than 150 mg of caffeine per liter. Under the ban, shops in England that sell the drinks to children would face fines (处罚) of up to $2500.
