4 . At some point in our lives during childhood, we have been told to “jump more” in order to grow taller. A couple in China encouraged their 12-year-old son to jump 1,000 times a day. They had also offered him 10 yuan for every 1,000 jumps he did. Why would any parent want their child to jump a thousand times every single day? This kid is 145cm, and the average height for kids of that age is 152cm. As typical Asian parents, they want him to grow taller and they also believed that jumping could help.

The boy’ s father gave him a jump rope and managed to convince (说服) him to start jumping. From that day on, he used the jump rope every day unless he fell sick, and he even jumped up to 3,000 times per day. After one whole year of jumping, the parents rewarded a total of 4,000 yuan. However, the boy not only did not grow taller, but he ended up being the shortest student in his class.

It turns out that he had been, spending the money that he earned on unhealthy snacks like potato chips! This explained the mystery where he often lost his appetite (食欲) at the dinner table and the “unexplainable” weight gain. His parents thought he was going through a hard time with study, but he was actually just snacking endlessly.

So, this is a clear example of how jumping rope does not help kids grow taller. Parents should really just accept that height is mainly affected by the parents’ genes, and also a healthy, balanced diet.

1. Why did the parents ask their kid to do more rope jumping?
A.To build up his body.B.To let his kids lose weight.
C.To let his kids grow taller.D.To give him more pocket money.
2. What surprised the parents?
A.Their kid almost jumped every day.B.Their kid fell ill because of jumping rope.
C.Their kid became taller and taller.D.Their kid became the shortest one in his class.
3. Why did the boy eat less at the dinner table?
A.Because he ate too many snacks.B.Because he didn’t like the food at home.
C.Because he wasn’t good at his study.D.Because he got hurt while jumping
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Exercise is important in the children’s growth.
B.It’s not right to ask the kids to jump rope.
C.Parents’ traditional thought turns out to be not correct.
D.The height of children mainly depends on sleep and diet.

5 . Of course you don’t want to be sick in your vacation. So what can you do while traveling? There are three things you should remember: relax, sleep and eat well.

A vacation is a time for relaxing, but very often it is not. There were so many places to visit: shops, parks, churches, and so on. You may spend most of the days walking around these places. This can be tiring. Don’t ask your body to do so much. A tired body means a weak body. A weak body gets sick easily. So sit down quietly in a nice place. In good weather, look for a quiet park bench.

Sleep is also important. If you want to stay healthy, you need to get enough sleep. Your hotel room may be noisy, or the bed may be too hard. Or you may want to stay up late at night. Then you should plan to sleep for an hour during the day. The extra hour can make a big difference.

Finally, if you want to stay healthy, you must eat well. This means eating the right kinds of food. Your body needs fresh fruit, vegetables and milk.

So remember this: If you want to enjoy your vacation, take care of yourself. Give your body some rest. Get enough sleep and eat healthy food.

1. You should _________ while traveling.
A.eat wellB.walk all the time
C.do shoppingD.ask your body to do a lot

6 . I travel a lot. Each month, I pack up my suitcase to hit the road, whether it could be by plane, train, or automobile. I always find myself with the same problem—how to stay healthy while traveling?     1

Move around.

Though only about 1 in 4, 500 airplane passengers develop a blood clot(血块), you should still make efforts to move around on the plane, just standing in the aisle or by taking a walk to the toilet. Have a layover(中途停留)? Instead of sitting, make sure to walk around the airport. Taking a road trip? Make plenty of stops to move around.     2     Whether it is working out at your hotel, taking hikes, or giving up public transport to walk, you’ll feel much better if you get in some activity.

Prepare snacks smartly.

3     Though these seem like a convenient choice, they’re not the healthiest. I like to pack snacks that are within my calorie budget for the day and 100 calories or under each. When traveling and buying food, I try to choose fresh fruit and vegetables. Is fast food the only choice if you’re very hungry? Stick to something simple and whatever you do, don’t supersize.

    4

Because of low humidity on planes, many of us can find ourselves feeling thirstier than ever. Drink more water. Make sure when traveling on day trips to carry water with you at all times.     5    As a result, you will eat more healthily throughout the day.

A.Eat, eat, eat.
B.Drink, drink, drink.
C.Here are some practical tips.
D.Once you get to your location, don’t forget to do exercise.
E.Water will also help you to be able to stay full between meals.
F.While at the airport or on road trips, you’ll pass countless fast restaurants.

7 . Almost every day, we discuss the topic of health, especially for kids. But what is health? “Health” means eating well, getting enough exercise, and having a healthy weight. Let’s read the following rules. They can help you stay healthy.

1. Eat a variety of foods, especially fruit and vegetables. We all know that eating fruit and vegetables can help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite foods. Remember that we can only get the nutrition we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruit and vegetables.

2. Drink water and milk most often. Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty of calcium (钙) to grow strong bones, and milk has a lot of it. Every day, you should drink at least three cups of milk (1300 milligrams of calcium), when you are 9 years old or older. You should also try to have less sugary drinks, like soda and coca. They include a lot of sugar. Sugar just includes calories, not important nutrition.

3. Listen to your body. When you are eating, notice how your body feels. When your stomach feels comfortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes you feel uncomfortable. If you do it too often, it can make you unhealthy and fat.

4. Limit screen time. What’s screen time? It’s the amount of time you spend watching TV, movies, and playing computer games. 10 . Children who eat three or more hamburgers a week are more likely to suffer from asthma(哮喘), researchers say. However, they say that the risk may not be caused by the meat-rich diet(饮食)itself, but by a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The study looked at 50,000 children from 20 countries. Parents were asked about their children's eating habits and whether they had ever suffered from asthma. The effects of their diet seemed to be different depending on where they lived. Fruit and vegetables are more helpful in less affluent parts of the world, while eating lots of fish was more helpful in richer countries. Eating at least three hamburgers a week was linked to(与……有联系)a greater risk of asthma, but only in wealthier countries.

Dr Gabriele Nagel said different things may cause asthma in different parts of the world. “This gives us more understanding of how asthma affects(影响)different people, and its effects in developing countries as well as developed countries,” she said.

High levels of unhealthy fat in hamburgers could increase the risk of asthma. However, the researchers said children who ate several hamburgers a week were likely to have other unhealthy lifestyle habits as well.

Researchers said the study helped us understand how asthma and diet are connected. “Previous studies have shown that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help to reduce a child's risk of developing asthma symptoms,” Dr Elaine Vickers said. “Our advice to parents is to make sure that children have a healthy diet and also get plenty of exercise.”
