文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了在现代社会中与邻居相处时可能遇到的噪音问题,并提出了解决这一问题的方法。

2 . Living in a modern society has its advantages and disadvantages. One disadvantage is that you often have to live closer to other people than you would like to. Sometimes, your neighbours make noise that you are not comfortable with.

The best way to solve this problem is to talk with your neighbour first. You should be very polite and ask your neighbour if he knows how thin the walls of your homes are. This way doesn’t criticise (批评) his behaviour; it simply points out that he may not realise how far his sound travels. Tell him that you know that sometimes you make noise as well, but that you do your best to keep it down. Often this will solve the problem right away, but sometimes the neighbour may become angry.

If your neighbour becomes angry with you, there are some more steps you can take. You might write a letter to the neighbourhood committee. Make sure you write down the source of the noise and the time in the letter. They will review the situation and decide whether your neighbour is out of line. Some noise is considered to be reasonable, even if it bothers you. So you may prepare a good pair of earplugs (耳塞).

Even if your neighbour makes too much noise, you don’t have to live your life in discomfort. It’s always a good idea to be friendly with your neighbours. You may clean the rubbish in front of his door. He’s sure to appreciate behaviour like this and be more open to your suggestions about the noise level.

1. What is the first step to deal with the noisy neighbour?
A.To buy a good pair of earplugs.
B.To offer suggestions to the neighbour.
C.To ask the neighbourhood committee for help.
D.To tell the neighbour how bad his behaviour is.
2. The underlined word “reasonable” in Paragraph 3 probably means “        ”.
A.terribleB.loud
C.properD.useful
3. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.You should control your noise as well.
B.You can live comfortably even if there is noise.
C.Your neighbour may be more friendly than you think.
D.You should offer some suggestions to your neighbour.
4. The author wrote this passage to tell us        .
A.why we should get on well with neighbours
B.how to relax ourselves in modern society
C.how to become known among neighbours
D.what we should do with our noisy neighbours

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了Zack King的猫Billy充当了一名“邮递员”,通过传递纸条,让Zack King和陌生的邻居成了笔友。

4 . Cats don’t live by the rules, and spend most of their time just doing what they want. For the cat owner Zack King, his cat Billy’s life was enigmatic. Free-spirited felines(猫类) who like to spend time outdoors are often gone for hours at a time, leaving their owners wondering where they’ve been or what they’ve been up to. However, King soon discovered that his beloved cat was serving as a “postcat”.

Billy comes and goes as he pleases through a cat door. One day in October, when Billy was inside, King noticed a folded piece of paper covered in a plastic wrap in his collar. King carefully unwrapped it and was surprised to find a note from his neighbors. “Your cat likes to come to visit us when he is outside,” it read. “He will sit at the door and run into our house. We have no idea where he comes from. He always wants people to give him lots of scratches(挠痒). What’s his name? Does he have an owner?”

King wrote a note back, attached it to Billy’s collar, and hoped it would make it to the original sender. “We’re so glad he’s making friends with the neighbors,” it read. “His name is Billy.” It wasn’t long before Billy came back with another note, and now months later, the neighbors are still pen friends. “We both like watching movies online and cooking at home,” King said. “We have no idea what the neighbors look like. We could ask for details but there’s no need—it’s nice to have some privacy sometimes.”

“I was frustrated as the nights got colder and darker. Billy is spending more time indoors and sweet exchanges have become less frequent,” he says. “To be honest, a closed door and a sensitive alarm can ensure the safety of our houses. But they can prevent neighbors from having healthy friendships. To break the ice, we just need a cat and a note.”

1. What does the underlined word “enigmatic” mean in paragraph 1?
A.Mysterious.B.Boring.C.Tough.D.Ordinary.
2. Why did King’s neighbors write a note?
A.To know the identity of the cat.B.To express his dislike of the cat.
C.To express his thanks for the cat.D.To ask King to take the cat back.
3. What can we learn from the last but one paragraph?
A.King has met with his neighbors before.
B.King hopes to thank the neighbors in person.
C.King shares common hobbies with his neighbors.
D.King has communicated with his neighbors online.
4. What does King imply in the last paragraph?
A.We should make friends with neighbors.
B.We should ensure the safety of our houses.
C.We should respect the privacy of neighbors.
D.We should keep pets to stay safe and healthy.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍成为积极倾听者的一些技巧。

5 . When communicating with others, we often focus on what we should say.     1     Listening well means not just understanding the words or the information being communicated, but also understanding the emotions the speaker is trying to convey. The following are tips for becoming an active listener.

Focus fully on the speaker. You can’t listen in an active way if you’re constantly checking your phone.     2     You need to stay focused on the moment-to-moment experience in order to pick up the important nonverbal cues in a conversation. If you find it hard to concentrate on some speakers, try repeating their words over in your head-it’ll reinforce their message and help you stay focused.

Display your interest in what’s being said by using body language. Nod occasionally, smile at the person, and make sure your posture is open and inviting.     3

Avoid interrupting or trying to redirect the conversation to your concerns by saying something like, “you think that’s bad, let me tell you what happened to me.”     4     You can’t concentrate on what someone’s saying if you’re forming what you’re going to say next. Often, the speaker can read your facial expressions and know that your mind’s elsewhere.

5     In order to communicate effectively with someone, you don’t have to like them or agree with their ideas, values or opinions. However, you do need to set aside your judgement and hold back blame and criticism in order to fully understand them. The most difficult communication, when successfully performed, can often lead to an unlikely connection with someone.

A.Try to set aside judgement.
B.Be aware of individual differences.
C.It will make you feel more self-confident.
D.Listening is not the same as waiting for your turn to talk.
E.Encourage the speaker to continue with “yes”or “uh huh”.
F.Thinking about something else also implies you are not an active listener.
G.However, effective communication is less about talking and more about listening.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。称某人为你的伴侣听起来很棒,但当那个人也是你最好的朋友时,这就变得更愉快了。文章主要说明了当你的伴侣是你最好的朋友时,会发生的五件事。

6 . Calling someone your partner sounds wonderful, but it becomes even more enjoyable when that person is also your best friend. Here are five things that happen when your partner is your best friend.

Make each other laugh.     1     Because you understand each other’s sense of humor, you enjoy bringing it out. Laughter lights up the worst of days. Best friends don’t laugh at each other, but they laugh with one another.

Cheer for each other. We all need our own personal cheer leader. Having someone who believes the best in us helps us to know the best in ourselves. Real friends realize our advantages even when we don’t.     2

Bring out the best in each other. Some people show best parts of themselves while others can bring out the best in you.     3     Something about their presence makes you want to be better people.

4     We all have parts living inside us somewhere. Many of us hide this part of ourselves. When you bravely reveal these pieces of yourself, you show how much you want to develop a closer friendship. If you find out that your partner accepts your hidden side, you will trust them more. This real friendship draws you closer to one another.

Lend a helping hand. Good friends come together to lend a helping hand. They see the need and help to meet the need.     5     Or occasionally they help you get more fun while you rest.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要说明了缺乏自信的原因并给出了获得自信的做法。

7 . Self-confidence is about trusting your judgement and your ability to do something well. It is also about being willing to consider the possibility that you are wrong and change your mind. It is a combination of courage and humility, which leads to open-minded thinking.       1    . It often prevents you from doing your best and perhaps from even trying. When you do try, your lack of trust in yourself may ultimately lead you to fail.

    2

·One of the reasons is the home environment where children grow and develop. They may find it difficult to develop self-confidence if their parents are critical or overprotective. Once they fail to fulfill expectations, they may feel bad about themselves and get trapped in the cage of self-doubt.

·    3    . If a child gets discouraged at school or in the neighbourhood, he or she may be afraid of speaking in public, even when he or she grows up to be an adult.

Self-confidence can be improved

·Work on positive thinking. A positive attitude will lead to positive results. Go for it and don’t worry about letting others down.     4    . Turn your negative thoughts into positive ones. You can always talk to yourself in a positive way, such as “I can do it!” or “I’ll give it another try!”.

·Set realistic goals for yourself and visualize yourself achieving these goals.     5    . It is important to break down the overall goal into smaller and more measurable tasks. For those tasks you are not so sure about, ask your friends or family for advice. Also understand that it is perfectly normal if you do not succeed in completing a task.

A.Instead, try to make up for lost time
B.All they expect is that you do your best
C.Confidence is built an a sense of accomplishment
D.Children spare no effort to satisfy parents’ expectations
E.Negative experiences also have a huge impact on self-confidence
F.Low self-confidence, in contrast, will make you feel unmotivated
G.The reasons for low self-confidence often differ from person to person

8 . We all feel lonely at some point, but long-term social loneliness can damage our mental and physical health. “Loneliness is a signal that you need human connection,” says Dr. Jeremy Nobel.     1    .

Know yourself

It’s easier to connect with people if you have shared the same ideas or experiences, so start paying attention to what’s on your mind.     2    . If you know what’s meaningful for you, it may lead you to an activity or creative idea that connects you to people.

Make something

When someone says make something, you can immediately say, “Well, I’m not Picasso. I don’t know how to do a fancy painting.” And, of course, you’re not! But the opportunities for creative expression are endless. You can plant a garden or try a dance move.     3    .

Take a risk by having conversations

Share something about yourself. It doesn’t have to be the biggest or darkest part of your life, but just something you think other people might find interesting and convincing.     4    , putting yourself out there requires a bit of risk, and it’s another important step to real connection.

    5

Whether it’s volunteering for a cause you believe in or just for fun, try to find others who share your interests. And if you follow your natural curiosities, you may find something new. Share your thoughts and feelings in creative ways with other people who have that interest.

A.Other people’s loneliness matters too
B.Find a group that matches your interests
C.Since you have shared some of your secrets
D.Here are some good tips to make connection

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了什么是积极倾听,以及做到积极倾听的方法。

9 . Active listening is a communication skill that involves going beyond simply hearing the words that another person speaks but also seeking to understand the meaning and intention behind them. The word “active” implies that you are taking some type of action when listening to others.

    1

Be fully present

Active listening requires being fully present in the conversation. It enables you to concentrate on what is being said. Being present involves listening with all your senses and giving your full attention to the speaker. To use this active listening technique effectively, put away your cell phone, ignore distractions, and shut down your internal dialogue.     2     And let everything else slip away.

Pay attention to non-verbal cues (非言语暗示)

As much as 65% of a person’s communication is unspoken,     3    . This involves not folding your arms, smiling while listening, leaning in, and nodding at key points. It can also be helpful to pay attention to your facial expressions when active listening so that you don’t convey any type of negative response.

Keep good eye contact

When engaged in active listening, making eye contact is especially important. This tells the other person that you are present and listening to what he or she says.     4     At the same time, you don’t want to use so much eye contact that the conversation feels strange. To keep this from happening, follow the 50/70 rule. This involves maintaining eye contact for 50% to 70% of the time spent listening, holding the contact for four to five seconds before briefly looking away.

Be patient

Patience is an important active listening technique because it allows the other person to speak without interruption. Being patient involves not trying to fill periods of silence with your own thoughts or stories. This also requires listening to understand, not to respond.     5     Also, don’t change the subject too abruptly as this conveys boredom and impatience.

A.Don’t prepare a reply while listening.
B.It also shows that you aren’t distracted.
C.This isn’t helpful during active listening.
D.So use open, non-threatening body language.
E.Don’t focus too much on insignificant details.
F.Place your focus on your conversation partner.
G.This involves using certain strategies or techniques.

10 . We’ve all been there—you’ve sent a message and it’s marked “read”, but you haven’t heard anything back. What’s the deal? While being left on read (已读不回) can be confusing, it’s also pretty common.     1     Here are a few tips.

Expect the best. Remind yourself that the person is probably just busy. Ask yourself if you actually know their schedule. There could be some time commitments you aren’t aware of. Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response.     2     They put their phone away to focus on work or school. They accidentally forgot to reply. Maybe they thought about what they wanted to say but didn’t actually text it.

Resist the temptation (诱惑) to double-text.     3     If you send a lot of follow-up texts, it’ll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch up on—the other person will probably appreciate your patience.

Read over your previous messages. See if there are any confusing texts that you need to clarify. It’s okay if you review your message again and notice that it might have been a little unclear—it happens!    4

5     Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind. Don’t let it upset or confuse you. If you get your mind off any notifications, you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.

D.They want to give you a longer response but can’t right now.
E.Ask yourself why being left on “read” frustrates or confuses you.
